The best gifts for watch lovers

Nine picks, and an honest warning: buying a watch for a watch person is harder than it looks.

By Brijon M.Published

If they already collect, buy accessories rather than a watch: a two-slot roll, a strap set in their lug width, a loupe. If this is their first proper watch, a Seiko 5 Sports or an Orient Bambino is the answer under $300.

Collector or newcomer? Everything depends on it

If they already own several watches, buying them another is the hardest gift on this site. Taste in watches is specific to the point of being personal — case diameter, dial color, movement, bracelet — and a collector has a list. The odds of landing on it are poor, and a watch is expensive to get wrong.

For a collector, buy around the watches instead: a roll, straps, a loupe, a cleaning cloth and spring bar tool, a good book. All of them are things they will use and none requires you to guess a preference.

For a newcomer the calculation inverts. They have no list, and almost any well-made mechanical watch is interesting to someone who has never owned one.

Where the money goes

Under $100 buys reliable quartz: a Timex Weekender, a G-Shock. Both are genuinely good at what they do. $100 to $300 is the sweet spot for a gift, because it buys a real mechanical movement — a Seiko 5, an Orient Bambino — which is the thing that makes watches interesting. $300 to $1,000 buys better finishing, better bracelets and sapphire crystal. Above that you are buying refinement a non-enthusiast will not notice.

The worst value in the entire category is a fashion-brand quartz watch at $150 to $250. You pay for the name and get a movement worth a small fraction of it. We compare the tiers properly in watches under $100 vs under $500.

The three measurements to get

Lug width, for straps — usually 18, 20 or 22mm.

Wrist size, for case diameter. A 44mm case on a small wrist looks wrong regardless of how good the watch is.

Bracelet sizing, which usually needs links removed — most jewelers do this for very little.

More detail in the watch gift buying guide, and splurge gifts if the budget is higher.

The picks, in full

Every pick includes who it is wrong for. Prices move constantly, so we link to the current one rather than printing a number that goes stale.

1. A first mechanical watch, and the best gift here under $300

5 Sports SRPD field watch

Seiko

A real automatic movement for the price of a mid-range quartz.

A genuine automatic movement visible through the caseback, at a price where a wrong guess would not be painful. For anyone who has never owned a mechanical watch, the moment they see it running without a battery is where the interest actually starts.

Skip it if: They want perfect accuracy — a mechanical watch drifts by seconds a day, by design.

2. Someone who already owns the watches

Leather watch roll, two-slot

Various

The gift for a watch person when you cannot buy them a watch.

Anyone with two or more watches has them loose in a drawer. A roll is the obvious fix nobody buys for themselves, it travels, and critically it does not require you to guess their taste in dials — which is what makes it the safe gift for a collector.

Skip it if: They own one watch and wear it every day.

Three straps turn one watch into three for under twenty-five dollars. The one thing to get right is the lug width — it is printed in the listing for their watch, or measurable with a ruler across the gap where the strap sits. 20mm fits an enormous share of watches, but check.

Skip it if: You cannot find out their lug width. A strap that does not fit is a dead gift.

4. A dress watch for weddings and interviews

Bambino dress watch

Orient

A dressy automatic with a domed crystal, at a price that makes no sense.

Most people own nothing to wear with a jacket. This is the gift that fills that specific gap: slim case, clean dial, leather strap, mechanical movement. It looks considerably more expensive than it is, which is exactly what you want from a dress watch.

Skip it if: Their life has no occasions that call for a dress watch.

5. A collector who needs a beater

G-Shock DW5600E

Casio

The square G-Shock. Effectively indestructible, and quietly fashionable again.

It survives being dropped, soaked and forgotten about, and the battery lasts years. The square case has moved from purely functional to something people wear on purpose, which means it works as a gift for a teenager and for a tradesperson equally well.

Skip it if: They need something that works with a suit.

6. Someone who wants to never think about it

Eco-Drive solar watch

Citizen

Charges from light. Set it once and leave it for a decade.

Solar-charging quartz is the most practical watch technology there is: accurate to seconds a month, no winding, no battery changes, no servicing. For a gift to an older recipient or anyone impatient with maintenance, this is the right answer and the dress-watch styling suits most wrists.

Skip it if: They want the mechanical thing specifically — this is a quartz movement and proud of it.

7. A first watch, or a watch for someone who loses watches

Weekender 38mm

Timex

The cheapest watch that does not look cheap.

Plain dial, swappable fabric strap, quartz movement. It is the watch to buy when you want to give someone a watch and do not want the gift to carry a hundred dollars of anxiety with it. Changing the strap makes it a different watch, which is a gift that keeps giving you something to do.

Skip it if: They already own a nice watch — this will read as a downgrade rather than a second option.

8. A watch person who also runs

Forerunner 55 GPS running watch

Garmin

A proper GPS running watch without the price of a proper GPS running watch.

It does the four things a runner actually wants — pace, distance, heart rate, and a battery that lasts two weeks — and leaves out the training-science features most people never open. It is also light enough to sleep in, which is how people end up using the rest of it.

Skip it if: They want notifications and apps. This is a watch for running, not a smartwatch.

9. A collection worth photographing properly

Custom printed photo book

Various

The one gift in this list nobody else could have given

It takes an hour to make and it is the gift people keep. It works best with a narrow theme — one trip, one year, one child — rather than a general collection, because a book with an argument is better than a book with volume.

Skip it if: You are short on time. Rushed photo books look rushed.

Questions people ask

Should I buy a watch for someone who collects watches?

Usually not. Taste in watches is highly specific and a collector has a list you cannot reconstruct. Buy around the watches instead — a roll, a strap set in their lug width, a loupe, a good book.

What is the best watch to give as a gift under $300?

A Seiko 5 Sports or an Orient Bambino. Both have real automatic movements, which is the thing that makes watches interesting to someone who has never owned one, at a price where a wrong guess is not painful.

Why are fashion-brand watches bad value?

Because you are paying for the name and getting a quartz movement worth a small fraction of the price. A $120 mechanical watch is a better object and a better gift than a $220 fashion-brand quartz one.

What do I need to measure before buying a watch strap?

The lug width — the gap between the lugs where the strap sits, usually 18, 20 or 22mm. It is printed in the listing for their watch or measurable with a ruler. A strap that does not fit is a dead gift.
