Editorial policy

The method behind every pick, written down so you can judge it.

Last updated

The short version

We pick real, currently sold products that suit a specific recipient at a specific price, we say who should skip each one, and we do not claim to have tested anything we have not tested. We are funded by affiliate commission, and commission plays no part in what gets recommended or in what order.

How a guide gets written

  1. It starts from a real question. Every page here answers something people are genuinely searching for — "gifts for someone who has everything", "how much to spend on a housewarming gift". We do not build pages around products we want to sell.
  2. The recipient is defined first. Before any product is chosen we decide who the page is for and what their constraint is: a budget, an occasion, a hobby they do not share.
  3. Products are chosen from research. Established models, currently sold, from companies with a track record. We favor products with a published warranty or replaceable parts, because those are verifiable facts rather than impressions.
  4. Each pick is written with its limit. The "skip it if" line is mandatory. If we cannot name a reason someone should not buy a product, we do not understand it well enough to recommend it.
  5. Internal links go where they help. We link to a budget tier or a related guide when it moves the reader toward the right decision, not to pad a page.

What disqualifies a product

  • It is discontinued, or stock is unreliable.
  • It is the budget version of an expensive category — the worst example of a good thing.
  • It requires a subscription to work properly, unless the page says so explicitly.
  • It needs a size or measurement that a gift buyer realistically cannot obtain.
  • Its only distinguishing feature is a brand name on the outside.

How the scores work

Roundups carry a score out of ten across four criteria, chosen because they are what matters to someone buying a gift rather than to someone buying for themselves:

  • Safe bet — how likely this is to land well with a recipient you do not know perfectly.
  • Thoughtful — whether it reads as chosen for a person rather than picked off a shelf.
  • Value — quality relative to what it costs, not cheapness.
  • Gets used — our judgment of how often it will actually be used rather than stored.

These are editorial judgments, not measurements. They are ours, they are arguable, and they are deliberately not published as product review ratings in any machine-readable form — because we have not lab-tested these products and marking an opinion up as a test result would be dishonest.

On prices

We do not print prices in our copy. Prices move constantly across retailers and a number published today is frequently wrong next month, so every buy link goes to the current price at the retailer instead. Where a price does appear on this site it is drawn from live retailer data and carries the date it was checked; where no live price is available the button reads "Check price on Amazon" rather than showing a stale figure.

Price bands in our copy ("under $25", "over $100") are approximate categories for navigation, not quoted prices.

What we never do

  • Invent reviews or testimonials. There are none anywhere on this site, and there never will be.
  • Invent ratings or review counts. We publish our own editorial score and nothing dressed up as aggregate customer data.
  • Claim hands-on testing. No "in our testing", no test lab, no owned units unless that is literally true and stated.
  • Invent credentials. Our author bio is short because it only contains what is true.
  • Accept payment for placement. No brand can buy a position here.
  • Use fake urgency. No countdowns, no "lowest price ever", no invented scarcity.

Commission and independence

Tag & Tissue earns affiliate commission on purchases made through our links. Commission rates vary by product and retailer, and we do not order recommendations by what pays most. Where a cheaper retailer is better for the buyer, we link to the cheaper one even when another option would pay us more. The full commercial picture is on the affiliate disclosure page.

Corrections

If something here is wrong — a product is discontinued, a specification has changed, a claim is not supportable — email contact@tagandtissue.com. We correct in place and move the page's last-updated date, rather than quietly editing or deleting it.
