The best housewarming gifts

Nine picks for the household rather than the person, because you have not seen the rooms yet.

By Brijon M.Published

The best housewarming gift is a household basic people under-buy: a cast iron skillet, two good towels, a large serving board, or a sharp knife. Spend $25 to $50, buy for the house rather than the person, and avoid anything decorative.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which gifts we pick or the order we rank them in. How we earn.

The etiquette, briefly

A housewarming gift is for the household, not the individual. That convention exists for a practical reason: you have not seen how they have arranged the place, so anything with a color or a style is a guess they will feel obliged to display.

The normal range is $25 to $50, going up for close family or a first home. Bringing nothing to a housewarming party is not a scandal, and a bottle or something edible fully discharges the expectation.

What a new home actually needs

In the first fortnight, the gaps that show up are unglamorous: a pan that does not warp, a knife that cuts, towels, a board big enough to serve from, a doormat, a torch, extension leads. Every one of these is more welcome than another candle, and none of them requires you to know anything about their taste.

If several people are contributing, put it into one substantial thing — a Dutch oven, or good towels for the whole bathroom. Both are purchases people postpone for years.

What to avoid

Decor. Art, cushions, vases, anything colored. You do not know the scheme.

The three duplicates. Cheese boards, serving platters and cocktail sets are the most-duplicated housewarming gifts by a wide margin. Ask first.

Anything large. Furniture and appliances need a measured space and a conversation, not a surprise.

Plants that need attention. A fussy plant during a move is a liability. A herb kit on a windowsill is fine; a fiddle-leaf fig is not.

Timing

On moving day, bring something consumable, because nothing else has anywhere to go. Save the real gift for a week or two later. For the people rather than the party, see gifts for new homeowners, and gifts under $25 if the budget is tighter.

The picks, in full

Every pick includes who it is wrong for. Prices move constantly, so we link to the current one rather than printing a number that goes stale.

Lodge

Outlives the kitchen it is given to.

It is pre-seasoned, oven-safe, and it will outlive the kitchen it is given to. New kitchens are full of thin pans that warp within a year, and this is the one that improves with use. If you want one answer and no further reading, this is it.

Skip it if: They have a glass-top stove they are precious about, or wrist problems. These are heavy.

2. A household that is going to be entertaining

Acacia cheese and serving board

Various

Gets pulled out every time anyone comes over.

A large wooden board makes a new host look competent for very little money, and it gets pulled out whenever anyone comes over. Go big — anything under about fourteen inches ends up being used as a chopping board instead. Worth checking they do not already have three.

Skip it if: Their kitchen already has three. This is a commonly duplicated gift.

Nobody buys themselves good towels, and every move leaves a towel gap somewhere. Two rather than a full set keeps it a gift rather than a furnishing, and white sidesteps the problem of not knowing the bathroom.

Skip it if: You do not know their bathroom colors and they care about that sort of thing. White is the safe answer.

4. A gift to hand over on the day itself

Baies scented candle

Diptyque

The candle people recognize, in the scent almost nobody dislikes.

Blackcurrant and rose: clean, not sweet, and not aggressively perfumed. Candles are the default host gift precisely because they are consumable, and spending real money on one is what separates a thought from an obligation.

Skip it if: Anyone in the house has a scent sensitivity, or there is a cat that knocks things over.

5. A kitchen that inherited a block of blunt knives

Fibrox Pro 8-inch chef knife

Victorinox

The knife professional kitchens buy by the box.

It holds an edge, the handle does not slip when wet, and it costs a fraction of what a knife this good normally does. Giving someone their first sharp knife is one of the most-used gifts in this whole list.

Skip it if: They are nervous around knives, or there are young children and no knife block.

6. A larger gift, or a group going in together

Enameled cast iron Dutch oven, 5.5qt

Le Creuset / Lodge

The pot that makes someone start cooking properly.

Braises, bread, soup, and a roast chicken all come out of this one pot, and enameled cast iron means no seasoning to maintain. The 5.5qt size is the useful one: big enough for a family meal, small enough to lift when full.

Skip it if: You are buying for a studio kitchen with no storage. These are enormous.

7. Someone who will be cooking a lot in the new place

Cross-back linen apron

Various

Nicer than the apron they own, which is probably a promotional one

A cross-back apron stays on without a neck tie, which is the design detail that makes people wear one. Linen softens with washing. It is a gift that sits somewhere between practical and decorative, which suits a new kitchen.

Skip it if: They are a messy cook who would want something machine-washable at high heat.

Sensor soap dispenser

Simplehuman

Mildly unnecessary, and people love it anyway.

It is the sort of small upgrade nobody puts on a list and everybody notices. For a new home, it also sidesteps the biggest housewarming risk: it does not have to match anything, and it does not need storing.

Skip it if: You are buying for someone who dislikes anything battery-powered on a worktop.

Modern Sprout / Click & Grow

A gift with something to do in it, which is rarer than it sounds

The appeal is the process: seeds, a few weeks, then basil on a windowsill. It suits someone who likes the idea of plants more than the maintenance, and it costs little enough to give alongside something else.

Skip it if: They travel constantly. Seedlings do not survive two weeks alone.

Questions people ask

How much should you spend on a housewarming gift?

$25 to $50 is the normal range, rising for close family or a first home. If several people are contributing, one substantial item — a Dutch oven, or towels for the whole bathroom — beats several smaller ones.

What is the best housewarming gift?

A cast iron skillet, two good towels, or a large serving board. All three are household basics people under-buy, none depends on knowing the decor, and all of them are used in the first week.

Do you have to bring a gift to a housewarming?

It is conventional but not obligatory. A bottle or something edible fully covers it, and that is often the better choice on the day itself when there is nowhere to put anything.

What should you not give as a housewarming gift?

Decor with a color or style, anything large you have not measured with them, fussy plants, and the three most duplicated gifts — cheese boards, serving platters and cocktail sets.
