The best gifts for cat lovers

Nine picks, with the honest caveat that the cat gets the final vote and will exercise it.

By Brijon M.Published

The best cat gifts are a feather wand toy, a stainless or ceramic water fountain, and vertical space. Cats drink too little and most indoor cats are short of height rather than toys — both are solvable for under $100.

Two problems worth solving

Almost every indoor cat has the same two unmet needs, and almost nobody buys gifts for either.

Water. Cats evolved to get most of their moisture from prey and are notoriously bad at drinking from bowls. Chronic low intake is associated with kidney and urinary problems, and a fountain is the simplest intervention available.

Height. Cats want to be above a room. A flat with nothing climbable is genuinely stressful for a cat, and a tall perch does more for behavior than any number of toys.

Toys: the cat decides

Be honest with yourself about this category. Cats reject most toys, and the ones they accept are frequently the cheapest. Wand toys that move like prey work; most things that sit still do not. Catnip works on roughly two-thirds of cats and does nothing for the rest.

Which is a reason to spend small here and put the money into the fountain or the perch — both of which the cat will use every day regardless of its opinions.

What to check and what to avoid

Plants. Lilies, in particular, are seriously toxic to cats, and several common houseplants are too. If you are giving a plant to a household with a cat, check it against a reputable toxic-plant list first — this is a real safety issue, not a preference.

Space. Measure before buying a tree. They are larger in a room than they look in a photograph.

Noise. Fountains have pumps, and a noise-sensitive cat or a small flat may not tolerate one.

Food and treats. Prescription diets are common. Ask.

Gifts for the owner

Worth remembering that half of this category is really a gift for a person who likes their cat. A photo book, a blanket for the hours spent being sat on, earplugs for the 4am yelling. See gifts for dog lovers for the equivalent logic, and gifts under $25 if you want a small addition.

The picks, in full

Every pick includes who it is wrong for. Prices move constantly, so we link to the current one rather than printing a number that goes stale.

1. The cheapest gift a cat will genuinely love

Feather wand teaser toy

Da Bird

The one toy that reliably gets a bored cat off the sofa

It moves like a bird rather than like a stick, which is why cats that ignore every other toy will chase this one. Under fifteen dollars, and the replacement feathers cost almost nothing when it is destroyed — which it will be, and quickly.

Skip it if: Nothing. Pair it with something for the owner if you want the gift to feel bigger.

2. A cat that will not drink from a bowl

Stainless steel pet water fountain

Petlibro

Cats drink moving water, and most cats do not drink enough

Low water intake sits behind a lot of feline kidney and urinary trouble, and cats prefer moving water. Choose stainless or ceramic over plastic — plastic holds the smell and the owner ends up replacing it within a year.

Skip it if: The cat is noise-sensitive, or the household would resent a pump to clean weekly.

3. A cat in an apartment

Frisco

Vertical space is the thing indoor cats are short of

Vertical space is what indoor cats are short of, not toys. A tall perch gives them somewhere to be above the room, which lowers stress in small flats and saves the sofa arms. Look for sisal rather than carpet on the posts — carpet teaches cats to scratch soft furnishings.

Skip it if: There is no floor space to spare. Measure before buying anything this size.

4. An owner with two thousand photos of one cat

Custom printed photo book

Various

The one gift in this list nobody else could have given

It takes an hour to make and it is the gift people keep. It works best with a narrow theme — one trip, one year, one child — rather than a general collection, because a book with an argument is better than a book with volume.

Skip it if: You are short on time. Rushed photo books look rushed.

5. The owner, for the hours the cat sits on them

CozyChic throw blanket

Barefoot Dreams

Absurdly soft, and the most reliably loved gift in this category.

It is a blanket, which sounds unimaginative until you watch someone open one. The reason it works as a gift is that it is purely for comfort — nobody needs it, which is what makes receiving one feel generous.

Skip it if: They are a minimalist, or they live somewhere genuinely hot.

1000-piece art jigsaw puzzle

Cheap, screen-free, and quietly social

A thousand pieces is the sweet spot: long enough to last a week on a dining table, short enough to finish. Buy one with a real image rather than a pattern — repeating patterns are for people who want to be punished.

Loop

Small, cheap, and the gift that gets quietly appreciated most.

They cut volume without the blocked-up feeling of foam, and the case fits on a keyring. For anyone who shares a wall, flies often, or is sensory-sensitive, this is a far more thoughtful gift than its price suggests.

Skip it if: They need total silence for sleep — look at the sleep-specific model instead.

8. A cat-safe plant, chosen carefully

Low-light desk plant in a pot

Various growers

A living gift that survives being ignored

Pick a pothos, a snake plant or a ZZ — all three tolerate low light and irregular watering, which is the actual condition of a desk. Avoid anything that needs humidity; an office is a desert with carpet.

Skip it if: Their workplace bans plants, or they travel constantly.

L'Occitane / Various

The small gift that is reliably finished rather than shelved

Anyone who washes their hands twenty times a day has cracked skin in winter. A good, non-greasy cream in a full size rather than a travel tube is an unexciting gift with a very high usage rate.

Questions people ask

What is the best gift for a cat owner?

A stainless or ceramic water fountain, or a tall sisal-wrapped perch. Cats drink too little and indoor cats are short of vertical space — both are real unmet needs that almost nobody buys gifts for.

Do cats actually use the toys people buy them?

Mostly not. Wand toys that move like prey work reliably; most static toys do not, and catnip works on only around two-thirds of cats. Spend small on toys and put the money into a fountain or a perch.

Are plants safe to give to a household with a cat?

Check first — lilies are seriously toxic to cats and several common houseplants are too. Verify against a reputable toxic-plant list before giving any plant to a cat household.

What should I avoid buying for a cat?

Unverified plants, anything large you have not measured the room for, noisy equipment in a small flat, and treats if the cat may be on a prescription diet.
