Men's vs women's watches as gifts
The labels matter much less than the case diameter, and that is the whole decision.
The meaningful difference is case diameter, not the label on the box. Buy 34 to 38mm for a smaller wrist and 38 to 42mm for a larger one, regardless of which section it is sold in. Movement quality and strap width do not differ by gender.

The verdict first
Shop by case diameter, not by section. A 36mm watch sold as a men's field watch and a 36mm watch sold as a women's dress watch are the same size on a wrist, and the movement inside is just as likely to be good in either. Which section a retailer files it under is a merchandising decision.
What genuinely differs
| Factor | Does it actually differ by gender? |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | Yes, in practice — women's ranges skew 26-36mm, men's 38-44mm |
| Strap / lug width | Follows case size, so smaller cases take narrower straps |
| Movement quality | No |
| Water resistance | No, though very small cases sometimes rate lower |
| Price for equivalent spec | No, broadly |
| Dial styling | Yes, but that is taste rather than specification |
The practical upshot: the only thing on that list you have to get right is size, and it is the one most people do not check.
How to get the size right
Measure the wrist, if you can. Under about 15cm circumference: 30 to 36mm. 15 to 18cm: 36 to 40mm. Over 18cm: 40 to 44mm.
Or look at what they wear. If they already own a watch, its diameter is usually printed on the caseback or findable from the model number.
If you cannot tell, go smaller. A slightly small watch reads as deliberate; a visibly oversized one reads as a mistake. This asymmetry is worth knowing.
Where the gendered advice does hold
Two places. First, bracelet sizing: smaller cases come on narrower bracelets with fewer links, so there is less adjustment range — more important to get it close. Second, the very small end of the market, under about 30mm, where the movement options genuinely thin out and quality per dollar drops.
Otherwise, the useful question is not "is this a men's or women's watch" but "is this the right size and the right style for this person".
What to buy either way
The recommendation does not change by gender: $100 to $300 for a real mechanical movement is the sweet spot for a gift. The tier comparison is in watches under $100 vs under $500, and the measurements and movement types are covered in the watch gift buying guide.
The picks, in full
Every pick includes who it is wrong for. Prices move constantly, so we link to the current one rather than printing a number that goes stale.

1. A 38-40mm case that suits most wrists
5 Sports SRPD field watch
Seiko
A real automatic movement for the price of a mid-range quartz.
Sold in the men's section and worn very widely regardless, which is exactly the point of this page. At 38 to 40mm it sits comfortably on a mid-size wrist, and the movement is the same whoever is wearing it.
Skip it if: They want perfect accuracy — a mechanical watch drifts by seconds a day, by design.

2. A dress watch at the smaller end of the men's range
Bambino dress watch
Orient
A dressy automatic with a domed crystal, at a price that makes no sense.
Slim, clean-dialed and around 38mm, which puts it in the overlap where the gendered labels stop meaning anything. If the recipient wants something for a jacket rather than for the gym, this is the pick either way.
Skip it if: Their life has no occasions that call for a dress watch.

3. The size-flexible option, because the strap swaps
Weekender 38mm
Timex
The cheapest watch that does not look cheap.
It comes in more than one case size and the strap changes in seconds, which makes it the lowest-risk watch gift when you are unsure about wrist size. Buy the smaller case if you genuinely cannot tell.
Skip it if: They already own a nice watch — this will read as a downgrade rather than a second option.

4. A square case that reads as unisex
G-Shock DW5600E
Casio
The square G-Shock. Effectively indestructible, and quietly fashionable again.
It survives being dropped, soaked and forgotten about, and the battery lasts years. The square case has moved from purely functional to something people wear on purpose, which means it works as a gift for a teenager and for a tradesperson equally well.
Skip it if: They need something that works with a suit.

5. Changing the look without changing the watch
NATO and leather strap set, 20mm
Various
Three straps turn one watch into three watches for under twenty-five dollars.
Strap changes are the cheapest meaningful upgrade in the hobby, and 20mm fits an enormous share of watches. Check the lug width first — it is printed in the listing for their watch, or measurable with a ruler across the gap where the strap sits.
Skip it if: You cannot find out their lug width. A strap that does not fit is a dead gift.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between men's and women's watches?
Mainly case diameter, and by extension strap width. Movement quality, water resistance and price for equivalent specification do not differ by gender — the section a retailer files a watch under is a merchandising decision.
What size watch should I buy as a gift?
Under about 15cm wrist circumference, 30 to 36mm. 15 to 18cm, 36 to 40mm. Over 18cm, 40 to 44mm. If you genuinely cannot tell, go smaller — a slightly small watch reads as deliberate, an oversized one as a mistake.
Can a woman wear a men's watch?
Yes, and many do. A 36 to 38mm case from a men's range sits comfortably on a mid-size wrist, and the movement inside is identical to what it would be in any other section.
Does the very small end of the market have worse watches?
Under about 30mm the movement options genuinely thin out and quality per dollar drops, because the mechanism has to fit a much smaller case. That is the one place the gendered advice does hold.
